What types of fabrics can be dyed?

If you decide to paint clothes made of synthetic materials, do not do it at home. Entrust such things to the dry cleaners. For synthetic fabrics, professional dyes are used. You can work with them by observing strict temperature and other conditions:

  • Polyester does not absorb paint well. It is difficult to work with such material both at home and in dry cleaning. The color is faded and will wash off after a couple of washes.
  • For painting nylon, you can use any powder chemical dyes. The fabric fibers easily absorb the coloring pigment. The raincoat is more suitable for cold coloring. That is, at home, you will be able to paint your own outerwear. At the same time, its color will be bright, uniform and indelible.
  • Cotton, silk, linen, wool, half-wool, half-silk – easy to color at home. The paint is evenly applied to the fabric. Cotton and denim products are most susceptible to paint.
  • PVC material is used for banners and outdoor advertising. For its painting, acrylic dyes and nail-based fixers are used.

Types of fabric dyes

According to its composition, it is customary to divide dyes into:

  • Acrylic
  • Aniline
  • Stamp
  • Plastisol
  • Natural

The choice of a particular paint depends on the purpose of use and the composition of the material. For uniform coloring, natural and aniline dyes are best suited, and for drawing on fabric – luminous and acrylic.

Acrylic fabric dyes

The most popular for silk, wool and cotton fabrics today are acrylic dyes. They are convenient to apply both small dot images and create entire masterpieces. Spectacular panels, small napkins or original blouses can be the subject of your pride.
The technique of painting with acrylic paints is identical to drawing with watercolor or gouache. Apply the image to the fabric with a pencil or a special marker, and then use a brush made of natural pile. Use a colorless outline to keep within the borders of the drawing.
To draw on the fabric, use acrylic paints on a water-dispersion basis. They have no smell and are well diluted with water. After completely drying, they become water-resistant and indelible from the fabric. However, in order to avoid the appearance of streaks, it is recommended to wash such things manually, at a water temperature no higher than 40 degrees.
Acrylic dyes are produced in the following types:

  • In tubes. The most economical form factor. Allows you to keep the paint fresh for a long time.
  • In cans. Aerosol paint is used for painting large areas of fabric. It should be noted that the material itself becomes rigid and ceases to stretch.
  • Spray. In contrast to aerosol, the dye is sprayed by droplets. It is not explosive because there is no pressure inside.

Aniline fabric dyes

This type of dye is available in the form of a powder or liquid. Suitable for single-color dyeing of natural fabrics.
As a rule, synthetic fabrics or mixed fabrics that contain more than 60% of artificial threads do not lend themselves to repainting.
Aniline dyes can achieve the following effects on the fabric:

  • Gradient. The fabric is gradually lowered into the VAT with the dye after equal time intervals. Then the part of the material that is half an hour in color will be darker than the one that has been in the liquid for only 10 minutes.
  • Divorces. The fabric is twisted as if to squeeze, and tied with a rope. In this form, the material is subjected to boiling.
  • Nodular. Small buttons or coins are covered with a cloth and wrapped with thread. After coloring, the material remains characteristic traces in the form of rays.

Stamp inks for fabric

Stamp inks are used in the hotel business and laundries for marking bed linen, towels and other consumables made of fabric. Their chemical composition is diverse:

  • Alcohol-based. Dry quickly. Withstands the action of bleach and boiling.
  • Based on water-glycerine. Quickly absorbed, does not get your hands dirty. It can withstand temperatures up to 70 degrees. The most commonly used color is black.
  • Oil-based. Resistant paint. Dries slowly after application.
  • Colorless. Invisible in normal light. They manifest themselves under the influence of ultraviolet light. Used for hidden marking.

Plastisol fabric dyes

Glowing patterns on clothing and sneakers are often found in people who hang out in clubs.
Unique images are applied with special fluorescent paints based on plastisol.
The following types are available for sale:

  • Glowing in the dark and under UV radiation.
  • Glowing only under the influence of UV radiation.

They also distinguish between visible and invisible colors. The latter in daylight have a white color, and in the dark glow blue, yellow, green or other colors.
